My name is Tang Tawanwad Wanavit. Most non-Thais just call me Tang. I was born in Chiangmai, Thailand in 1991. I became obsessed with cameras and lighting since I was 18. I’m currently working in a film production company in Thailand called Hyphen & Slash.
I became interested in Street Photography in January 2017 from seeing Tavepong Pratoomwong’s works, the excitements in his images attracts me.
What is this series?
The series is called “Monsters of the Shallow”. It’s a search for underwater monsters in local swimming pools.
How/When did you start this series?
In mid 2017 I had this crisis of not wanting to meet people I know. I go into the city less, and shoot street photography around the rural areas more. It decreases the chance of meeting people I know.
Apparently the safest place is underwater. I shot underwater when ever I have the time back then. Both night and day.
In the present day, the fear of meeting people is over, I have no problem going into the city and meeting people, but swimming has become something I embraced, it’s still the best place to be in focus and have fun.
What message do you want to tell the audience?
I don’t have any message to communicate with the audiences. This project is more of a reaction project. I don’t think when I go underwater, if people in front of me acts, I just react. If it looks like a monster, I shoot it.
