Neon Diary

Say something about yourself?

Hi, I’m Trin. While I’m writing the interview for c-Type magazine, I’ve just graduated from the ICP (International Center of Photography) in New York. Before being here, I graduated from the Faculty of Communication Arts, Bangkok University. I started taking pictures while I was joining the Archery Club at Kasetsart University which the most interesting thing to me in that time was about depth of field of camera. Since then I’ve been fascinating in photography.

What is this series?

This series is called ‘Neon Diary’ which is about the passing away of my grandmother. Every time I travel, I would think about the transferring state of her identity to another place. That’s a metaphoric of the circle of life and death. The point is that I named this project as ‘Neon Diary’ because of the neon’s flickering. The frequency of neon’s flickering is beyond human perception which we always think is just a still light. Actually it has been flickering countless times similar to our life and mind.

How/When did you start this series?

This work was initially created in early 2014, but it was decent when I attended a course at ICP. It began when I registered a photo book making class which 70% provided knowledge about photo sequencing and photo editing. Every week, we had a seminar session which it took 4 hours for discussion and going through every questions. In this meeting, teacher looked through my works, asked some questions, and started to see a life story. She then questioned further about deaths, so she wanted me to dig more into archives of mine which tended to have connections to my emotions and feelings. At first, I was not quite sure with the teacher’s request until I found a couple of photos; one is an image of my bed in a hotel and another is of my grandmother’s funeral bed. I was shocked because both images were taken in the same perspective and I could still find several photos taken in the same perspective. I wondered how this happened, so I reviewed the photos and began to realize that the incident happened from my subconscious. I carried on with what I had found and later on, it became a first drafted book called “Neon Diary” and eventually is this work I’m presenting to you.

What message do you want to tell the audience?

For me, this work is like a monk necklace on many people’s neck. It doesn’t exist for a reason of arrogance or superstitions, however it does exist to remind ourselves that the death is certain and can take place anytime since births and deaths happen uncountable times in our body; just like a neon.

Any your news update?

In a part of neon diary, I will continue as a long-term project. I haven’t aimed of any ending to where it placed. I try to concern more about photo editing for my book. I hope that this project will be converged with another side project called ‘hidden-space’.
