I’m Donna, a Singapore-based photographer. I’ve been shooting for 6 years. My interest is in human relationship and conditions.
Somewhere Only I Know was done in 2015 when I took part in the IPA Mentorship Programme. It’s an introspective view about myself — of my emotional states at different states of my life, of my different roles. I’m not good at words, so photography is a very good means for me to express feelings that I find it hard to describe. the use of collage gives me more creative liberty to create the world which is complex and only i can see. The tearing of the materials into pieces in the process also signifies the breaking down of identity, which I feel i have lost part of it when I left my place of original.
This project has been exhibited in a few photography festivals including Singapore International Photography Festival, as well as Obscura Festival of Photography and Tianshui Photography Biennial, which both took place this year. Apart from photography, I have also been painting for more than a year, it’s a very interesting way of creativity and expression and I hope to be able to combine the 2 art forms eventually in my projects in the future.
Donna Chiu (Hong Kong/Singapore) moved to Singapore 22 years ago. It was then when she picked up the camera for the first time. Initially photography started as a medium to preserve a fleeting moment in time. As for self-expression, the camera allowed her to connect to the world and convey her thoughts and ideas through pictures.
Chiu is a member of a local photography collective 5iveFootWay, and was selected as a featured photographer in a local photography project +50 by Platform. Her work has been exhibited and published in Singapore.
