Tom Potisit Hon.F.RPST has made a name as a professional who stimulates conversations on relevant social and environmental issues through both his fashion and artistic photography. Tom’s Bangkok Creative Studio supports outstanding Thai talents for international markets, while his HOP Hub Of Photography is a community that empowers Thai photographers to grow professionally, while bringing their work to a wider audience.
In his role as a board member of the Royal Photographic Society of Thailand, he is responsible for international relations, with a mission to create more international exposure for Thai photography, using photography as a real tool to both bridge and build international relationships among countries, groups and individuals around the world.
In addition, he was recently appointed as the official liaison officer of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP). His work has touched upon a range of important global issues from minority rights, endangered marine animals, organ donation and environmental issues. He has also appeared as a TEDx Speaker on the topic - Changing the World One Image at a Time.
Tom Potisit’s photo series 'The Middle Path' is a blend of Buddhist beliefs in Thailand with the art of imagination using ropes, known as 'Shibari,' which originated in Japan and is reflected in various art forms worldwide. The photographs in this collection uniquely merge Buddhist values and contexts in Thailand, creating a synthesis of aesthetics and philosophy that captures the eye and prompts questions about emerging beliefs. It's an exploration of delicate collaboration between physical restraint, mindfulness, and release.
Each photograph captures a moment of profound thought and contemplation. The images depict individuals entangled in intricate ropes, with beautifully arranged symbolic objects in a simulated space. The meticulously tied ropes are not just physical representations, but they also symbolize the interconnectedness of all living beings and the cyclical nature of existence. The blending of the ropes and Buddhist beliefs within these images aims to provoke deep reflection about the essence of order, acceptance, and transcendence. The contrasting elements of confinement and freedom are delicately conveyed, inviting the viewer to explore the harmony between the body, spirit, and objects. The subjects in the pictures have peaceful expressions, with closed eyes in a serene state, suggesting a profound connection with their bodies, emotions, and surrounding context. With mindfulness, the impermanence of the body pushes the boundaries of expression in the interpretation of the image.
Another aspect of gender diversity in Thai Buddhism is the existence of gender-diverse individuals in the monk community. Thailand has been somewhat accepting of this for a while. The artist was once ordained as a monk, filled with numerous questions about the clergy under the umbrella of Buddhism. As time passed, being a novice led to seeking the truth. During that time, the group within the temple taught the principles of Buddhism. However, the artist chose to study independently from the temple's library, realizing that humans are just humans, always shaped by their context, state, and emotions. Some may choose the monastic life and find temples specifically accommodating their development and increasingly modern interpretations of the teachings. Overall, while Thai Buddhism primarily focuses on males, there is room for gender diversity within its scope, including opportunities for women and gender-diverse individuals to become monks as human beings choosing their path to enlightenment.
The photographic series "The Middle Path" presents images imbued with ideas revealing the intersection of human vulnerabilities and religious context. They serve as evidence of critiques on the reality of spaces and societal testament to Buddhist beliefs intertwined with imagination and gender diversity. This leads to the context of analyzing individual and societal roles within Thai society.
